Hearing Aid Types

Behind The Ear Hearing Aids

Behind The Ear or BTE hearing aids are the more traditional hearing devices. The difference between them and the newer receiver in canal devices is the fact that the receiver (the speaker) is contained within the body of the hearing aid. These devices are reliable and many of the hearing aid brands have introduced more discreet but powerful models over the years.

BTE devices sit behind your ear and are joined to your ear with a traditional type tube and mould or, more commonly, a thin tube and some sort of custom tip that sits in your ear canal. The thin tube option is as discreet as a RIC device, but it may not be suitable for everyone. It depends on the hearing loss involved.

BTE devices are very reliable hearing aids and rarely break down.

Receiver In Canal Hearing Aids

Receiver In Canal (RIC), or sometimes Receiver In The Ear (RITE), depending on which hearing aid brand it is, are hugely popular devices. In fact, a large proportion of hearing aids sold privately are RIC devices. Their popularity is driven by their versatility and size; they are very discreet devices but can deliver a lot of power, which means they are suitable for even the most severe hearing losses.

RIC devices separate the receiver from the rest of the workings of the hearing aid; this allows the devices to be small and low profile at the top of the ear. It also means that the hearing aids can be used with receivers with different levels of power, making them suitable for more people.

While RIC devices are reliable, the Achilles heel is in the receiver placement in the ear canal. It means that every user needs to take care of the receiver following a daily clean and care ritual. Time spent on care and cleaning will ensure that your receiver does not fail. RICs are not suitable for everyone; if you have problems in your ear canal or middle ear issues, a RIC device might not be the best option for you.

In The Ear Hearing Aids

In The Ear (ITE) hearing aids are pretty much any type of hearing aid that completely sits in your ear. There are several types:

  • Full Shell - which fits into, and completely covers, the bowl of your ear
  • Half Shell - which fits into, and covers half of the bowl of your ear
  • In The Canal - which sits in the canal but extends out into the bottom of the bowl of your ear
  • Completely In Canal - the ever popular Invisible In Canal which sits deep within the canal and isn't visible at all

ITE hearing aids are not suitable for everyone, like RIC devices they are not suitable for people with ear canal infection issues or middle ear issues.

Rechargeable Hearing Aids

Rechargeable hearing aids have surged in popularity in the last few years mainly because of new battery technologies that have entered the market. Those technologies ensure that any user will get a full day of use out of one charge, even if they like to stream audio to their hearing aids. This has given us professionals the confidence to... read more »
